Taking the first step is as good as being half finished. Warm congratulations and wishes for the success of this newly founded magazine! Heartfelt thanks to the Chinese and international editorial board, reviewers, editorial staff, friends of the publisher (Tsinghua University Press), and colleagues and friends from various circles. Further, heartfelt thanks for the great help and valuable support of Tsinghua University, Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China, China Science and Technology Association, Press and Publication Administration of China, and other units.

The 21st century is the century of neuroscience, and the nervous system is the body’s most complex organ system. In early 2013, Europe launched the “Human Brain Project” with participation from more than 15 European countries. Then, US President Mr. Barack Obama announced to the world that it is important “to promote technology innovation in neural brain research programs”. In China, the “Long-term Scientific and Technological Development Plan” (2006–2020) and “Brain and Cognitive Science” scientific topics are included among the eight basic research subjects.

Translational medicine has developed rapidly in recent years. This new mode of medical research advocates patient-centered treatments, which start by raising questions from clinical work, followed by related basic research, and then quickly turning the basic research results into clinical applications to improve the overall level of health care, ultimately benefiting patients. The rapid development of international clinical translation in neuroscience has resulted in an increase in the emergence of high-level scientific research, which is a strong incentive for improving the level of clinical care.

Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang”. The school was renamed “Tsinghua School” in 1912, the university section was founded in 1925, and the name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928. Today, most national and international rankings place Tsinghua as one of the best universities in China. Life sciences and medicine are very important for Tsinghua University as it embarks on the process of becoming a world-class university, which is a priority for this institution. Through the tireless efforts of all parties, the influence of life sciences project at Tsinghua University has now risen above historic rankings in China. Currently, medicine and life sciences are given top priority for development at Tsinghua University, with a strong emphasis on brain research. Through everyone’s hard work, numerous important and original achievements have been made and have been translated into clinical applications with the distinctive feature of innovative integration. For example, Tsinghua deep brain stimulation, bioresorbable mineralized collagen material for craniotomy reconstruction, and the brain-machine interface (BMI) have been developed successfully. Other breakthroughs, such as the establishment of the Stem Cell Research Center, the Medical Imaging Research Center, the Department of Bioengineering, and the Institute for Brain Science, represent the close connection between basic and clinical studies.

In the spirit of integrating life sciences and cutting-edge research in translational clinical neurosciences, we have successfully founded a new science and technology journal. Translational Neuroscience and Clinics (Transl. Neurosci. Clin. CN 10-1319/R, ISSN 2096-0441) is a peer-reviewed, international, and interdisciplinary research journal launched by Tsinghua University Press in 2015. The journal focuses on all aspects of neuroscience, as well as on the related disciplines of neurology, psychiatry, and neurosurgery, and offers a rapid publication route for comprehensive reviews as well as original research communications or full papers. Translational Neuroscience and Clinics publishes high-quality original research articles and reviews, focusing on novel neuroscience ideas, new technologies, and achievements, with an emphasis on clinical care medicine based on translational values.

We hope to establish a scientific and standardized, innovative editing and publishing operation to improve management efficiency. We strive to enter internationally renowned retrieval systems as soon as possible and to achieve a place at the forefront of scientific and technical journals. This journal will facilitate the creation of an academic exchange and cooperation platform that will effectively promote basic medical research, clinical trials, and translational research, thereby promoting the future development of life and clinical sciences worldwide. This journal aims to attract neurosurgeons, neurologists, basic science researchers, and scholars in related fields by presenting the latest advancements in the field. We firmly believe that energy and persistence conquer all things.
